Headmaster's Blog | Friday 21 June

24 January 2020

One of the things I love most about being a Head is the variety of the role. One minute I am cheering teams on from muddy sidelines and the next I’m delivering sermons in the peaceful sanctuary of the Chapel.

On Thursday, I wrote this blog from a hotel in the stunning Dartmoor countryside, dressed in black tie, ready to network with around 20 fellow Heads of Prep Schools. We’re known colloquially as the ‘Oxford Group’, by other IAPS schools, as we have particular interest and experience in preparing our pupils for the very best next steps.

It’s important to me to spend as much time as possible at Caldicott – I don’t really like to be away from school – but often there is so much to be gained from the perspective that a little distance affords. In a whirlwind 24 hours of meetings, activities and a nice dinner I will have benefited a lot from speaking to my colleagues about best practice in pedagogy and leadership, and debating the most up to date issues in education.

I was back in school this morning, ready for this blog to go out, and ready to see off our boys on their Exeat weekends. Whatever the boys are doing this weekend, from spending some relaxing family downtime, to staying with friends or guardians, to going off on exciting adventures, as I’ve heard from some of the boys – I hope that they and you all have a wonderful time. I look forward to seeing you all rested and recharged on Sunday evening/Monday morning.
