19 March 2021

With the notable exception of no sports fixtures against other schools, this week has been the most normal of weeks for nearly a year. As a school we have become ever more adept at ensuring we have a comprehensive system of controls to reduce the risk of transmission whilst also ensuring that the boys are experiencing the education we all want them to experience. Their art work from the ‘View Form my Window’ is on display to brighten the walls, the 3rd Form will later today perform the drama workshop titled ‘The Iliad and The Odyssey’ and our oldest boys have had either mock CE exams or Harrow Academic Scholarship exams. The activity programme for both day boys and boarders is progressing well and our musicians are preparing for the Spring Concert next week. In a week’s time we will be on the last day of the Spring Term and I am confident that the boys are shaking off their lockdown experience.

Looking ahead, I am delighted that we host a number of varied Easter courses which will mean that if you or your sons would like to maximise time at Caldicott over the holiday period, then they can. One of the big looming questions to be answered before the Summer Term arrives is whether sports fixtures will be able to happen against other schools. As things stand ‘grassroots’ sport can recommence on the week after next, but this does not necessarily apply to inter-school sport. Step 2 (12 April) and Step 3 (17 May) of reopening do not specifically mention inter-school sport, but with the commitment to grassroots sports and the essence of what is included for Step 2 we have booked in fixtures for next term in anticipation of approval from the Department of Education. We are therefore working on two things: escalating the system of controls and holding detailed conversations with our sporting rivals. This will lead, we hope, to a glorious moment when your son can represent his school in a sports fixture. Sadly, this isn’t a promise though.

We are also mindful that Caldicott along with the rest of England will hit warp speed once Step 4 (21 June) is reached. We are planning for The Friends Summer Party, Sports Day and Prize Giving. Let’s hope nothing happens to make this change.

Have a good weekend.
