Caldicott House Maths 2020

13 February 2020

This term, all Caldicott boys have taken part in the annual Caldicott House Maths challenge.

All boys took part in a quiz, then selected members of each House took part in a competition divided into Lower School (Year 4), Middle School (Year 5 and 6) and the Senior School (Year 7 and 8). Within these competitions, the boys needed to complete three tasks in their groups. They were:

  1. Several questions and puzzles.
  2. A numerical crossword where one half of the team answered the across questions and the other half the down questions.
  3. The lightning round where the teams had to answer as many questions as possible within the time limit. When they finished the puzzle, one member of the team ran around the room clockwise to hand their answer to a marker. If they answered correctly, they were given the next question, if it was wrong, they had to run back and try again – but always in a clockwise direction.

The winning teams from each Year Group, plus the overall winner, were announced in assembly with the House trophy being awarded to the House Captain.

The results were as follows:

  • Junior School Result
    4th Jenkins | 3rd Wood | 2nd McArthur | 1st Cooper
  • Middle School Result
    4th Wood | 3rd Jenkins | 2nd Cooper | 1st McArthur
  • Senior School Result
    4th McArthur | 2nd = Cooper and Wood | 1st Jenkins
  • Overall School Result
    4th Wood | 3rd McArthur | 2nd Jenkins| 1st Cooper

The joy of Mathematics lies in the ability to appreciate pattern and order and hence the universe; to solve puzzles that give the brain something to think about. Caldicott encourages an enthusiasm for Mathematics as a lively and exciting subject and the House Maths Challenge is a great example of this.
