Around the World in 80 Days

26 November 2019

After much anticipation and excitement, boys in the 5th and 6th Form gave two outstanding performances last week of the Jules Verne classic Around the World in 80 Days.

Telling the story of the fabulously wealthy Victorian gentlemen, Phileas Fogg who wagers his life’s fortune that he can circumnavigate the globe in just 80 days. Along with his hapless valet, Passepartout, he sets out on a dazzling escapade that takes him from the misty alleys of London to the subcontinent and on to the Wild West as they race against the clock on a dazzling succession of trains, steamers, wind-propelled sleighs and elephants.

The Senior production is always a highlight of the Autumn Term, it's the culmination of a process that started with the audition process back in the Summer Term. After five months of line learning, scene blocking, costume fitting and set building, it was finally time to raise the curtain. For two sold-out nights the cast received standing ovations for their energetic and humorous performances.

Special mention must go to Edward M and Freddie M who played Passepartout and Inspector Fix respectively. However, even more credit must go to Phileas Fogg himself, Ollie R, for an excellent portrayal of the character as he took the audience with him on his journey around the world.

The whole performance was further enhanced by the backstage crew, who worked seamlessly together to transform the set – which included fantastic lighting and technological touches.

Headmaster, Jeremy Banks said ‘The acting and enthusiasm of the boys along with the excellent staging, direction, production and wonderful costumes made it a pleasure to watch. There were so many clever, entertaining and amusing touches and special effects which added to an incredibly polished production. All involved deserve huge congratulations. My thanks go to Ma’am Duncan and Mr Evans, alongside a raft of colleagues and pupil backstage crew who worked tirelessly. Their professionalism, stamina and creativity shone throughout in abundance.’
