Radley College Prep Schools Orchestral Day

06 November 2019

As part of Caldicott’s initiative to grow Music participation throughout the school and encourage boys to take up musical instruments, on Tuesday, six Caldicott musicians took part in a Prep School Orchestral Day at Radley College.

The day was split into sectional rehearsals of wind, brass, lower strings, upper strings and percussion. Then into concert band or string orchestra rehearsals and then all music groups coming together as a full orchestra.

All the repertoire was topical and themed around Bonfire Night with music ranging from the three movements of Handel’s famous suite of Music for the Royal Fireworks, written in 1749 for King George II, to Katy Perry’s song Firework, released in 2010.

The boys also had the opportunity to hear two Radley musicians play solo works: Gershwin’s beautiful The Man I Love on the piano and J S Bach’s Adagio in G Minor for solo violin, giving everyone a flavour of the range and standard of music at Radley.

The boys really enjoyed being able to get involved with larger music groups and had a great day finishing with an excellent performance to parents. Thanks go to Sam Gladstone, Precentor, Simon Carr and the staff of Radley College Music department for working with all the boys on the day.
