Caldicott STEAM Fair 2019

16 October 2019

The second Caldicott STEAM Fair was back with a bang this year with boys entering a range of new, interesting and at times quirky inventions.

The school was delighted to welcome Mr Barry, Head of Science at Harrow School, to judge the finalists on STEAM Fair day, ably assisted by Ma’am Naidoo.

The Steam Fair is the culmination of a summer holiday challenge open to all boys to develop an idea and demonstrate how they have researched their topic, experimented, tested a solution and evaluated how effective it was at solving a real-world problem. Ideally, it includes a balanced mix of science, technology, engineering, art and maths skills.

After two rounds of internally shortlisting the entries, the finalists were announced ready for the final on Saturday 12 October.

There were lots of ideas submitted with 20 boys making it to the final. This was due to their projects being practical, creative, readily testable and different. There was a very strong environmental theme to the boys’ entries with some similar ideas being pitted against each other in the finals. The day saw our visitors enjoying the head to head eco clean off, two different ways to filter water, two very different uses for drones and a recycled paper chair amongst others.

Mr Barry was very complimentary about the standards, the effort that the boys put into their work and the enthusiasm with which the topics were explained. He was particularly impressed by the winners’ tenacity overcoming early setbacks and challenges.

The winners were:

  • Lower School Award – Hari K (4th Form) with his plastic bottle lid separating machine for recycling.
  • Lower School Commendation – Agastya A (3rd Form) for his induction loop electric car charging.
  • Senior School Award – Luca K (5th Form) for his ideas on ways to filter water in developing countries.
  • Senior School Commendation – Ben S (5th Form) for his edible cutlery to cut down on single-use plastic.
