County Hockey for 6th Form Pupil

09 May 2019

Over the last few months, Alex LS (6th Form) has been taking part in a County Hockey programme representing Berkshire.

To take in the programme, Alex was nominated by his club (Reading) based on his individual performance over the course of the season. He then went through a selection procedure over several weeks, where the top 25 players were selected for the Academy. From the Academy, individual squads were selected to represent Berkshire at matches against other counties on match weekends. Not all 25 individuals in the Academy made it into the squad; Alex was one of the lucky ones after his hard work and determination paid off.

At weekends, Alex trained with the squad and had the opportunity to play in five of the nine county matches. Of these matches, Alex and the team won three, drew one and lost one with Alex scoring seven goals laying as a centre forward role. The squad, unfortunately, lost the four that Alex did not play in. The team’s coaches said that having Alex in the team gave them an attacking dimension they could not replace in his absence.

The programme was a fantastic way for Alex to play more matches against successful teams and improve his skills further. This will aid Alex well when he moves to Millfield in September where hockey is part of his scholarship.
