House Instrumental Music Competition 2019

22 March 2019

The boys, parents and staff were treated to some brilliant performances recently, as part of the Caldicott House Instrumental Music Competition.

The competition ran throughout the Spring Term with boys volunteering to take part from each of the four Houses. They chose their pieces and went through the first rounds trying to impress the judges and make it to the final. 20 boys made it through and they performed to the boarders and their parents on Thursday 21 March.

This year, the School welcomed Mr Sam Gladstone, Precentor at Radley College, as the adjudicator; he had the enviable task of choosing two commended and one winner from the Junior Competition and the Senior Competition.

Highlights of the evening included trumpet player Liam A’s (3rd Form) compelling Jiggedy Jig by Jim Frith; Jeremy Y (2nd Form) on the piano with Fur Elise (Part 1) by Beethoven; 4th Former Harry A’s very characterful performance on the violin with Concerto in A Minor (1st mov’t) by Vivaldi and 5th Former Cyrus C’s very entertaining rendition of Mozart’s Rondo alla Turca on the marimba.

However, it was the following boys who received the top prizes on the night:

Junior Competition

  • Winner: Anand N (2nd Form) - The Stowaway by Wilson (piano)
  • Commended: Alex A (3rd Form) - Pomp and Circumstance by Elgar (euphonium)
  • Commended: Victor G (3rd Form) - Prelude in E Minor BWV 938 by Bach (piano)

Senior Competition

  • Winner: Matthew D (6th Form) - Voiles by Debussy (piano)
  • Commended: David N (6th Form) - Gavotte by Handel (guitar)
  • Commended: Beau G (5th Form) - Clair de Lune by Debussy (piano)
  • Special Runner-Up Award: Archie W (5th Form) - Samba Time by Francis (drums)
  • Special Runner-Up Award – Cyrus C (5th Form) - Rondo alla Turca by Mozart (marimba)

As this was a House competition, boys who took part in the preliminary rounds were scored on their performance and the totals added to the finalists’ scores.

The results were:

  • 1st | Wood (474)
  • 2nd | Jenkins (434)
  • 3rd | McArthur (391)
  • 4th | Cooper (377)

Well done to all the boys who took part in the competition!
