2nd Form Declamations 2019

08 March 2019

On Friday 8 March, the 2nd Form held the final of their Declamations competition in the Chapel.

All the boys have been working hard in the run up to the final, to learn and perform a poem of their choice. Their excellent efforts made it very difficult for Ma’am Riddell and Ma’am Corrigan to choose the finalists.

Pieces included Companion by Clive Webster, The Mystery Creatures by Wes Magee, Oh, My Old Man’s a Dustman by Michael Rosen and Mary Didn’t Have a Little Lamb by James Carter.

On final day, the boys had added final polish to their performances and the standard was very high. Head of English, Mr Evans, had the unenviable task of adjudicating. He was very impressed with the quality of their poems and complimented each boy in turn on how well they had done.

The winners were:

  • FirstAnand N with The Toad and the Snail by Roald Dahl. Mr Evans said his performance was an excellent display of storytelling and he recited the poem with a lot of excitement.
  • SecondMontgomery CS with The Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. Mr Evans said Montgomery created great atmosphere whilst reciting this poem. He was very well controlled and it was a delight to listen to.
  • ThirdElliot T with The Good Earth by Marian Swinger. Mr Evans said this was a very mature choice from Elliot. His clarity throughout was excellent with soft intensity.
