Recognising the Whole Community

In PHSEE this term, boys have been working on ‘Thankyou’ projects, looking directly at the non-teaching staff of the Caldicott community.

The boys have been learning about the story of Captain Plumb and his parachute. Plumb was a US Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. After combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile and he was ejected and parachuted into enemy territory. He was then captured and spent six years in a Vietnam prison. Many years after this ordeal, he met a man in a restaurant who told him that he was the one who packed his parachute. Plumb replied that if he did not pack his parachute, he wouldn’t have been here today. The question ‘Who packs your parachute’ is what the boys have been thinking about recently.

With this question in mind, the boys have been discussing the different types of roles of Support Staff at school: Grounds, Maintenance, Administration, Catering and Housekeeping etc. They then discussed how these different people have helped them in some way.

The 1st – 3rd Form wrote thank you cards to each member of staff with a personalised message about why they are thank full for the work they do. In the 4th Form, the boys discussed and voted for a member of the support team who they think has made their lives a little brighter. That person was Boris Good, a member of the Maintenance team.

Sam G stood up in assembly to say a few words: ‘Last week Mr Timms set my class a challenge. We had to find a member of staff – not a teacher – and thank them for what they do at school. I already knew I wanted to speak about Boris. Since the 1st Form, he has been making me laugh by telling me stuff about his sheep called Barry (not sure this is true…) and the fact he is scared of penguins and spiders. He is always friendly and nice to all the boys at Caldicott but usually we walk past him without taking much notice of what he is doing. I don’t think any of us have ever said thank you for all his help. This is a good time to think about all the members of staff who don’t teach and thank them. I’d like to take this time to say a big thank you to Boris and Barry the sheep.’

Sam, and the Headmaster presented Boris with a bunch of flowers in assembly as a token of their appreciation.

The boys also had the following to say about other members of staff:

  • ‘I don’t know his name but his dog, Max, really makes me feel happy.’
  • ‘He built my desk especially for me and it meant that I could read and write much easier last year.’
  • ‘She works really hard to organise my time when I need to be away and I couldn’t do all my acting without her.’
  • ‘Two years ago, our bus broke down on the motorway and she got us all out safely and was really calm. I always remember her for that.’
  • ‘Snacks are the best part of my day. Her smile makes me really happy.’
  • ‘She is a nurse and always there for me when I injured my knee.’
  • ‘The school would not be the same without Borris. He’s funny and always asks after us. He tests us on our timetables and he asks me, ‘what’s 5x5?’ and we say, ‘25’, and he says, ‘No, it’s 25.0!’
