1st Form Virtual Declamations 2020

25 June 2020

In June, the 1st Form took to the virtual stage for the concluding declamations event this year. Due to boys learning from home, it was a slightly different affair than normal; the boys filmed their performance and sent them to Head of English, Mr Evans, to review.

On the evening of Wednesday 24 June, with an audience of family and friends, Mr Evans gave live feedback and announced this year’s winners.

Mr Evans said that taking part in declamations, even at this age group, was an important aspect of Caldicott life and a great way to become more confident with public speaking. It was also an opportunity to hear how poetry is supposed to be heard and appreciated. He was hugely impressed with the calibre this year and choosing a winner was not an easy task as all performances were fantastic and very enjoyable to watch.

The winners were as follows:

  • First | Rafe G with Life Doesn’t Lighten Me by Maya Angelou. Mr Evans said Rafe’s delivery was spot on and performed with a variety of emotion throughout.
  • Second | Archie B with The Lion by Roald Dahl. Archie gave a confident performance with great emphasis and build towards the end.
  • Third | Louis M with My Teacher took my iPod by Kenn Nesbit. A brilliant performance with great storytelling.

A Special Commendation prize went to Sebastian C with If I were in charge of the World by Judith Viorst. Mr Evans gave Sebastian the special commendation prize because his performance was incredibly captivating and charismatic, and deserved a mention.

All the declamations finals are now over and we look forward to the competition starting again next year.
