World Book Day 2019

08 March 2019

Caldicott fully immersed in all things books and reading on Thursday 7 March, as the boys took part in World Book Day.

All members of the school community, including teachers, dressed up as their favourite literary character, with costumes including Oompa Loompa’s, a Mad Hatter, Where’s Wally, Sherlock Holmes and Fantastic Mr Fox. Classroom doors were also decorated as book covers.

The school was also pleased to welcome Frank Cottrell Boyce, screenwriter and novelist, who came to speak to the boys about his writing and career. Boyce is best known for his children’s fiction and collaborations with film director Danny Boyle. He wrote the opening ceremony to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and sequels to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Leading up to World Book Day the boys took part in the Big Read and the Readathon. For the Big Read, all boys came together in the Performing Arts Centre to read to each other in pairs. One day the junior boys would read to the senior boys and on the next day, they would swap. This is the second time the school has run this initiative and everyone enjoyed taking part. For the Readathon, the boys were sponsored to read as many books as they can within a certain time period. All the money raised will go towards the Read for Good charity which buys books for schools and brings stories to children in hospital with their mobile bookcase and storytellers.

Once again, World Book Day at Caldicott was fantastic. The day greatly helps to encourage boys to become more involved in their reading and talking about books. We are already looking forward to next year.
