Let's Debate

06 February 2019

Article written by Zain P (4th Form)

On Tuesday this week, Ma’am Cusworth took Ben S, Henry C and me to the Oratory School for their ‘Let’s Debate!’ Day alongside eight other prep schools.

In the morning, we took part in a carousel of activities that included ‘balloon’ debates, public speaking and voice projection workshops. After lunch we were given the debate motion and 45 minutes to prepare for the debating competition that afternoon. We were opposing the motion ‘This house believes that homework should be abolished.’

Henry opened our opposition with humour, I continued with some serious thoughts on the value of homework and Ben summarised our arguments with reference to Einstein! After some feedback from the judges, we were delighted to hear that we had won the competition. We were awarded with medals and certificates, and we have brought back to school the winners’ shield to be engraved.

It was an excellent day and we really learnt lots to improve our public speaking.
