Senior Declamation Finals 2018

05 February 2018

For the English department, few nights are as important as the final of the declamation competition.  This marks the culmination of a process that starts with every boy from the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Form learning his chosen piece by heart and declaiming to his classmates.  Mr Evans faced an arduous task, narrowing down the field to just six performers from each year group.

The final itself was judged thoughtfully and with great precision, thanks to the insights of our guest adjudicator, Mrs Stephanie Binnie, Head of English at Merchiston Castle School.  It was very hard to pick between the various finalists, such was the talent on display.  We are indebted to Mrs Binnie for giving such comprehensive feedback to all of the boys who took part.

The results were:

  • 3rd Form: Charlie N - "I Like words" by Robert Pirosh.
  • 4th Form: Edward M - "The Babysitter" by Michael Rosen.
  • 5th Form: Sam M - Extract from "The Tell-tale heart" by Edgar Allen Poe.
  • 6th Form: Woody W - Extract from "The Edelweiss Pirates" by Ayub Khan Din.

Mrs Binnie also chose to award the Special Prize to Charlie H for his performance of "All I want is Scruffy back" by Jeffrey Grenfell-Hill which narrowly missed out on the top spot in the 4th Form competition.  The overall winner of the competition was judged to be Woody W because of the quality of his emotional delivery.

Many congratulations to the victors and to all who took part.

David Evans
