French is started in the First Form, when boys are immersed into French language and culture through songs and language games, and continues until the 6th Form when they take Common Entrance or Scholarship papers to their public school. All boys get to sample a French breakfast at some point over the course of the year which goes down very well!

Boys are also offered the opportunity to study Both Italian and Spanish as extra-curricular activities. These language clubs are growing in popularity as boys enjoy the opportunity to learn some of the language basics, learn about the culture and perhaps have the chance to make their own pizzas!

The ethos of teaching is balanced between the four skills: Listening, speaking, reading and writing, with French being used as much as possible in the classroom. To encourage the boys to use the spoken language, there is a 6th Form trip to France every year. We have previously visited Normandy and Brittany but this year the boys went to Paris where they were shown around the city by a native speaker and also got the chance to visit Versailles.
