On Wednesday 10th February, finalists from the top four year groups gathered to compete in the annual Declamation Competition. Throughout the Spring term, every boy in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth form has learned by heart a declamation piece of their choice. They then competed in class heats, declaiming their pieces in front of their peers. The best performers progressed to the semi-finals, with just a few from each year group gaining a place in the final.
The competition was adjudicated by Mr AM Hanrahan, Housemaster of the Prebendal School in Chichester (and former Head of English at Caldicott). The variety shown in the choice of pieces was impressive and the standard of performance was incredibly high in all year groups. Mr Hanrahan did an excellent job, providing each boy with detailed, positive feedback about their delivery. It was his unenviable task to pick the champions.
Third Form: J Pinsent - "The ABC" Spike Milligan
Fourth Form: C de Hemptinne - "No breathing in class" Michael Rosen
Fifth Form: C Scopes - Soliloquy from "Julius Caesar" Act III Scene 2 William Shakespeare
Sixth Form: H Lloyd Yorke - Speech from "The Promise" Aleksei Arbuzov
The overall winner was judged to be H Lloyd Yorke, whose performance captivated the audience. Mr Hanrahan also awarded a Special Prize to T Glazebrook for his performance delivering an extract from Sue Townsend's "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole".
